Department of Energy Utility News in June

Announcements were made on funding released for nuclear power plants and education in nuclear energy disciplines.

The Energy Department has announced a short list of the most likely recipients of $18.5 billion in government loan guarantees for building the first new nuclear power plants. The department recently informed four companies planning reactors in Maryland, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas that their applications have been elevated for closer scrutiny. The four were singled out for closer review “because they are furthest along in obtaining a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission,” according to Energy Department spokeswoman Stephanie Mueller.

The proposed projects singled out for “due diligence” review, often the final phase of the review process, are Constellation Energy for a reactor at its Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant near Lusby, Md.; NRG Energy for two new reactors at its South Texas Project near Bay City, Texas; Southern Company for two new reactors at its Vogtle power plant near Waynesboro, Ga., and South Carolina Electric & Gas, for two new reactors at its V.C. Summer power plant near Columbia, S.C.

The D.O.E. also announced nearly $9 million in awards to support the next generation of American nuclear energy development. Under the Nuclear Energy Universities Program, the Department of Energy will provide $2.9 million in scholarships and fellowships to 86 U.S. nuclear science and engineering (NS&E) students, and will offer more than $6 million in grants to 29 U.S. universities and colleges in 23 states. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, about half of the nuclear industry’s workforce will be eligible to retire during the next 10 years. The scholarships and fellowships under the NEUP program will help make sure we are training nuclear scientists and engineers to replace these workers and maintain America’s role as a leader in the nuclear energy research.
